Overview
Chenjiagou International Tai Chi Institute

Chen Bing Tai Chi Academy entrance in traditional Chinese architecture
Chenjiagou International Tai Chi Institute occupies a historically significant location at the southern entrance to Chen Village — adjacent to the former residence of Chen Changxing (the master who famously taught Yang Luchan), Chen Zhaopi's mausoleum, and the site where Yang Luchan is said to have secretly learned Tai Chi. The institute is the largest training facility in Chenjiagou by area.
Founded in 2007 by Chen Bing, a 12th generation Chen family direct lineage holder designated as a nationally recognized new-generation leader in the martial arts field, the institute has run continuous programs for over 15 years.

Rest Days
Monthly rest days follow the lunar calendar: the 10th, 20th, and 30th of each lunar month (or 29th in short months). On these days — which coincide with Chenjiagou's market days — students are taken by the residential teachers to visit the village market, ancestral hall, and scenic area for cultural immersion.

The institute operates two campuses. The new campus, opened in 2021, includes upgraded kitchen, dining hall, and training facilities. On-site supermarket for daily necessities. 24-hour hot water. Full-time residential teachers supervise students outside training hours.

A Note on Facilities
While the institute's newer campus offers modern-looking accommodation, at least one student who trained in Chenjiagou reported hearing from students there that hot water, electricity, and air conditioning can be unreliable at times. This is worth verifying directly with the institute before booking, particularly if reliable utilities are important to your stay.
Information last reviewed May 2026, based on the institute's 2026 enrollment announcement and student accounts from Chenjiagou. Verify current pricing, program availability, and facility conditions directly with the institute before booking.
Student Account: Daily Life at the Institute
The following is based on a first-hand account from a student who trained at the institute.
Accommodation
The dormitory rooms contain only a bed and two small cabinets — students need to bring or purchase everything else themselves. Delivery services to the village can be expensive or unavailable, so plan to bring essentials from the city. New arrivals should expect to do a thorough clean before settling in.
Food
- Breakfast: Steamed buns, pickled vegetables, millet porridge
- Lunch and dinner: Two meat dishes and two vegetable dishes (the "meat" dishes typically contain a few strips of meat in an otherwise vegetable dish)
- Cost: ¥30/day — described by the student as "essentially vegetarian"
Training
Classes run from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Content focuses on foundational basics and Old Frame Yilu. Students are motivated and self-directed — many practice after class and review material before the next session. As one student noted: "The gap between your eyes understanding a movement and your muscles remembering it is the distance of ten thousand repetitions."
The Village
One of the more memorable aspects of Chenjiagou is not the school itself but the village. The shop owner near the campus put it well: "Don't underestimate anyone in this village. The person selling bracelets at the market stall, the old man sitting quietly at the gate, the supermarket owner — any one of them could be a Chen family lineage holder." Children in the village don't do standard physical education — their PE class is Tai Chi.
The school courtyard features a large Tai Chi yin-yang symbol. Swallows nest under the eaves.
